H is for...

Holiness.

God is holy. He is the only one who is worthy of our worship. He is the one that is perfect in everything. He is the only one who isn't going to make bad choices. Therefore, we are to continually strive to be holy as God is holy. This isn't easy. But, it should be our daily goal. We will never actually be holy here on earth. We will fail daily. But, along the path, we should become more holy, more like God. We may have some setbacks, but our overall course should be towards perfect.

During a small group meeting, years ago, we were discussing holiness. One member got quite emotional because she felt we were focusing on how our own efforts could make us holy--when it is only the Lord who makes us holy.

I understood where she was coming from, but I think there is this weird paradox. God grants us holiness, but we must also, by our words and deeds, strive to be holy. It comes full circle though, in that we make our best "efforts" at holiness when we are focusing on the Lord, meeting him in prayer and meditation, reading his word. All that creates in us a desire to please him through our choices.

Like you say, we will fail at this daily, but we can pick ourselves up daily and begin anew.
